Heritage Open Days Teatime Talks
Join us for a series of evening talks to hear about some of Dover’s ‘lost’ architecture, every evening from Monday 15 - Friday 19 September in Dover Museum Community Cinema.
All talks are free to attend but pre-booking is required. Doors open 5:30pm for 6pm start; talks last approximately an hour. Tea and coffee will be available for a small donation to the museum.
Monday 15: Some Lost Dover Medieval Buildings Book here
Join Keith Parfitt of the Dover Archaeological Group for an illustrated talk about some of the lost medieval buildings of Dover such as the Saxon hall near the Market Square, the Town Wall, and the gun towers on Clarke’s Pier.
Tuesday 16: Some Lost Western Heights Buildings Book here
Join Andy Rayner from the Western Heights Preservation Society for an illustrated talk about some of the demolished buildings on Dover’s biggest fortification, the Western Heights including Grand Shaft Barracks and Garrison Church, and hear about Andy’s model recreations of some of them.
Wednesday 17: Dover Promenade Pier Book here
Join Martin Easdown/Martyn Webster for an illustrated talk about Dover’s first pleasure pier, how many failed attempts there were to finance and build it, and why it ultimately failed.
Thursday 18: Lost Industries of the River Dour Book here
Join Barry O’Brien from Dover Tales for an illustrated talk about the former industries of the River Dour which flows through the town, from tanneries and breweries to corn and paper mills.
Friday 19: Shakespeare Colliery, Kent’s First Coal Mine Book here
Join Colin Varrall of the Elvington and Eythorne Heritage Centre for an illustrated talk about how the building of the first Channel Tunnel in the 1880s led to the building of the first colliery in Dover and the start of the Kent Coalfield mines.
