The Deal Man
Carved Celtic Votive Figure
The 'Deal Man' is a 7 inch, or 18cm, high carved chalk figurine found in 1987 by the Dover Archaeological Group at excavations at St. Richards Road, Upper Deal in the Mill Hill area.
Celtic Iron Age in style, the figure was found in a chamber at the bottom of a 2.5 metre deep shaft, probably fallen from a niche in the wall above where it lay. It seems to date to the Romano-British period. The shaft was also filled with early Roman debris including pottery shards from late first and early second centuries AD.
